Ringtones - Really Noisy

Mobile phones, as a convenient communication tool full of individuality have become an important part of our lives. Downloading ringtones from websites has become young people's new favorite pass time. However what the younger generation has forgotten is that in some specific situations and special time, ringtones are not considered as a symbol of fashion but regarded as noise.

According to human bearing capacity to sound, living regions can be divided into three classes from 0 to 3. Class 0 is assigned to places that call for special quiet environments such as convalescent districts, deluxe hotels and so on. In this region the noise criterion is 50 decibels during daytime and 40 at night; class 1 is ideal for residential areas, education districts and so on. The noise criterion in the daytime and night are 55 and 45 decibels respectively; the criterion of class 2 is 60 to 50, and it suits the mixing zone where there are residential, commercial and industry areas; class 3 can only serve industry districts and the noise criterions are between 65 and 55 decibels.

Tested by the method of measuring sound levels, ringtone sound levels average 76 decibels one meter away from the mobile phone set, and still 60 decibels five meters away. The sound intensity would reach up to 128 decibels when a mobile phone is put beside ear. It is 80 decibels one meter away if two sets are ringing together. By this classification, ringtones could really be very "noisy".

Say, what would you feel if a sudden music erupts on another cell phone when you are engaged in one of your favorite book? Maybe you won't consider it as music at all. On the contrary, do you feel embarrassed when everybody gazes at you when your proud fashion ringtone breaks an occasion of harmonious peace? To avoid this, a vibration or silence mode can be the best choice.

If you are looking to download ringtones then feel free to visit ringtones.

Finding Leaks in Your Household Plumbing - Electronic Leak Detection

Generally speaking electronic leak detection is used for locating leaks on underground water lines. Leaks above the slab and under raised foundations (wood floors), are not discernible with conventional leak detecting equipment and are better and more economically dealt with by conventional means.

Finding the leak

Sewer and drain line leaks are best located with sewer cameras. To begin with it should be determined that there is a leak under a concrete floor, before initiating electronic leak detection. Signals are a hot spot on the floor, the sound of water running when all plumbing fixtures are not in use and water coming from someplace on the floor (ground floor), or at a low point on a wall (1st story). Hot water coming from a cold tap and a water heater that does not shut off, or re-ignites quickly, are other signs. At that point one should check the water meter. If the needle is moving and no plumbing fixtures, or bibs, are in use, then there is definitely a leak somewhere. If the main shut-off valve is closed and the meter's needle stops, it indicates that the leak is in the house (building). Otherwise it is occurring between the meter and the dwelling.

Location of leak

Once it is determined that the leak is in the house, the house shut-off valve can be reopened (causing the meter needle to resume movement) and the hot water shut-off valve, located on the cold water inlet to the water heater, can be closed. If the needle again stops moving, it means the leak is on the hot water line.

Once it has been determined where the leak is, the loss of water can be controlled by closing either the hot water heater shut-off valve, which will still leave you with the permanent use of cold water, or by closing the house shut-off valve, if it is a cold water leak, which will leave you with no water. If there is not substantial water coming into the dwelling, these valves can be re-opened for short term use and then re-closed during times of non-use. This allows the occupants to flush toilets, take showers, wash dishes and laundry, etc., while the diagnoses and repair process is being implemented.

To perform the leak detection, the pipes are disconnected, usually at the water heater, and pressurized with nitrogen. This particular gas is excellent for making a "high-pitched" sound that is easily detected through a set of high-quality head phones using a sophisticated listening device. Once the highest decibel of sound is located, the leak is pin-pointed. Occasionally the sound will transfer through a channel of some kind, usually plastic pipe wrapping and the point of discovery may be a few inches or feet away, but we have experienced better than 95% accuracy with our electronic leak detection equipment.

Can You Hear Me Now? Noise in the NICU

Sensory systems are unique. Sure, they have the same basic wiring. But each infant may respond differently to the same stimulus. When responding to a brief loud noise, one baby may display some mild motoric stress signs such as widened eyes and raised eyebrows. But he may also be able to demonstrate self-regulatory behavior by bringing his hands together in midline.

Another infant, perhaps even his twin, may demonstrate more marked motoric stress signs with full arm extension and finger splays, mouth agape, and mild arching of the trunk. This may last much longer than just a startle reflex and likely indicates stress. As neonatal therapists we must note and support each individual response.

Take home thoughts and resources:

1. We must support the infant's individual responses to sensory stimuli on a continuous basis during care. Providing this type of developmental care is not extra or secondary. It is humane and necessary. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And we must support the whole as we proficiently provide all medical care and therapeutic intervention.

2. It's also important to consider noise as a stressful stimulus in the NICU. A great resource for all NICU design and environmental standards is listed here. The link posted below will bring you right to the section dedicated to the acoustic environment. (Source: http://www.nd.edu/~nicudes/stan%2023.html)

3. Is your NICU monitoring noise? Monitoring noise is not a punitive measure for the staff, but rather a step toward a more healing environment for the fragile babies in our care.

4. You can buy a simple hand held decibel meter at Radio Shack or Amazon.com to begin monitoring your noise levels (search for 'decibel meter'). Your unit may already have a system installed that continuously monitors noise, or may wish to investigate this type of monitoring.

5. Regardless of how involved your unit is in addressing issues related to sound, what matters immediately is supporting the infant in the moment. Many of the design issues take significant time and financial investment to remedy. While you address those long-term goals, you can still provide great care to your patients. Awareness alone is the most vital component.

Best Computer Speakers - An In-Depth Buying Guide

Computer speakers get far less attention than their more expensive counterparts - home theater system speakers. While the latter are much fussed over, adequately researched, tried and tested before buying, most consumers just pick up whatever they can get their hands on (and can afford) at the local electronics store when it comes to computer speakers. The truth is that most of us spend far more time before a laptop or desktop than watching movies on the TV; doesn't it make more sense to invest more time and money into buying the best computer speakers you can afford?

A decade or so back, when multimedia computers were still an anomaly and things like 'Dolby Digital Surround Sound' were just technical gibberish terms, computer speakers used to be puny little devices capable of reproducing only the poorest quality sound. Of course, things have changed dramatically since then. Today, you can buy the best computer speakers that will reproduce lifelike sound at an affordable price.

There are some big brand names that always come to the mind when talking about the best computer speakers. Creative, Logitech, Altec Lansing, JBL are a few of them. These companies have a long history of excellence. Some, like Logitech and Creative, are often far more visible in the computer speakers market than in the home entertainment system segment. The quality of their products for laptops and desktops, thus, is typically of a higher quality than similarly priced competitors.

Sound Card

There is a caveat, however. Before you set your eyes on buying the best computer speakers you can afford, you must understand that a lot depends on your laptop or desktop's sound card too. The purpose of this card is to render and process audio information. Almost all computers have an in-built sound card typically capable of doing an adequate job of audio reproduction for day to day use. Every sound card comes with its own software, which, in most cases, is bundled up along with the motherboard drivers.

However, to get the most out of your audio experience, you should consider getting an additional sound card installed. This additional card would fit into your motherboard's PCI or PCI Express slot. The audio quality offered by this card would be much better than the standard card that is built-in in most motherboards. This card is capable of high quality, multi-channel audio reproduction (Dolby Digital Surround Sound, etc.). It may also have multiple ports for recording audio. If you are an audiophile, or enjoy recording music on your computer, then you should definitely consider getting an additional sound card for your system.

Nowadays, you can also purchase an external sound card that fits into the USB port. This type of card is meant more for audio professionals who need to carry their equipment around and is not recommended for home users.

Computer Speakers Buying Guide

Once you have a quality sound card - whether in-built or purchased additionally - you can get down to buying the best computer speakers for your needs. For this, you have to understand your requirements and budget first. A set of high quality speakers can set you back by over $200, while you can get an 'adequately' functional speaker system for less than $50.

For audiophiles, nothing less than a 5.1 speaker system would do, though a set of quality 2.1 computer speakers would be quite adequate as well. Hardcore gamers would do well to invest in a surround sound system as it would provide the highest level of immersion into the gaming experience. Musicians and hobby recording artists should invest in a set of studio monitors. These are a typically a set of 2.0 speakers with strong bass output. They do not have any in-built equalizer, so you get the most faithful reproduction of your reproductions and can adjust the mix levels accordingly.

For regular users, a simple 2.0 speaker set up, or a mid-range 2.1 system would be more than adequate. Your choice would, of course, be influenced by your budget. A surround sound system would be decidedly more expensive than a 2.0 set-up.

As far as technical specifications are concerned, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

1. Frequency Range
The human ear can hear sounds up to 20,000 Hz. The greater the frequency range of the computer speakers, the better the audio reproduction. Typically, a good system will have ratings from 10 Hz to 20,000 Hz, ensuring that you get the best rendition of low (bass) as well as high frequencies.

2. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)
Signal to Noise Ratio or SNR is a measurement of how much a signal has been corrupted by noise. To understand it in layman terms, think of it as the ratio of the amount of useful information (signal) passing through as compared to the useless bits (noise). The greater this ratio, the less the signal corruption.

All you need to understand is that higher SNR numbers translate into better audio reproduction. SNR is measured in decibels (dB). Speakers are typically rated at 65 dB, 75 dB, 90 dB, etc. You should try to get a speaker system with as high a SNR number as possible.

3. Audio Input
The best computer speakers should have a single pin audio input. They should be compatible with your laptop, iPod, desktop, etc.

4. Output Control
The best computer speakers would have buttons, knobs, etc. for controlling the audio built directly on the speakers themselves. These can range from knobs for controlling the bass, volume, treble, etc. along with power on/off buttons, etc.

5. Construction Material
Although your computer speakers aren't expected to take too much damage, you should nevertheless invest in something that can last you a few years. Higher quality speakers have woofers made out of denser materials like glass fiber, Kevlar, etc. This provides deeper, richer sound reproduction.

If your system has a woofer, it should ideally be housed in dense, thick wood for optimum performance.

6. Appearance
Appearance is something that varies from individual to individual. Remember that you'll spend a lot of time before your computer, staring at the speakers. Getting something that is visually pleasing should be a consideration, albeit a not too important one.
